Nutria (myocastor coypus):
Nutria were originally brought to the area from South America for their fur. However, the population very quickly got out of control, and they became a very large problem.
Nutria eat the marsh plants and their burrows damage water control structures. They also carry parasites that can be bad for humans and other animals.
To try to combat these animals the state of Louisiana has but a bounty on the tails of the animals to encourage hunting. Also, fences are put up around properties that want to be free of Nutria.
