Zebra Mussels (Dreissena Polymorpha):
The Zebra Mussel came to the area after getting into the ballast water of ships, and then being dumped into the water when the ships landed. They have since become a very large problem, and one of the worst invasive species in the area.
The Zebra Mussel can have a very negative affect on the food chain in an area. They feed on phytoplankton by filtering them out of the water, which keeps the other fish from eating them. The Mussels also filter algae out of the water which can reduce the amount of oxygen in the water.
This species is combatted by making sure that when boats are taken out of the water they are properly cleaned.
